Overview

Our Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine Department at ITM Hospital, Gwalior, is focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of lung, airway, chest, and other related respiratory system diseases and disorders. Having a team of highly qualified professionals, including pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, sleep medicine professionals, and critical care doctors, we integrate the latest diagnostic modalities, treatment procedures, and personalized care to ensure that our clients breathe easier and live healthier.

What We Offer

Comprehensive Diagnostic Services: The first step is to identify the cause of respiratory symptoms, which include dyspnoea (shortness of breath), persistent cough, wheezing, chest tightness, sputum, or haemoptysis. We utilize pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volume measurement, diffusion capacity), chest imaging (X-ray, HRCT Scan), arterial blood gas analysis, bronchoscopy, sleep studies (polysomnography), and evaluation of oxygen saturation with pulse oximetry.

Medical Management of Respiratory Diseases: In case of chronic and acute diseases, we provide evidence-based and supportive medications such as inhalers (bronchodilators, corticosteroids), systemic medications, biologic treatments, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and specific treatment against respiratory infections. Diseases that include asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary hypertension, tuberculosis (TB), and pneumonia, among others, are handled with professional care.

Interventional Pulmonology & Therapeutic Procedures: We offer more advanced, minimally invasive strategies such as bronchoscopy to obtain a biopsy and to remove foreign bodies; thoracentesis and pleural biopsy (to treat pleural disease); pleurodesis; airway stenting, bronchial balloon angioplasty of constricted airways, endobronchial valve, endobronchial thermoplasty (to treat severe asthma); and massive haemoptysis. It is performed in special endoscopy/bronchoscopy suites with safety measures.

Critical Care & Respiratory Support: In patients with respiratory failure, acute exacerbations, or life-threatening conditions of the lungs, we have the option of providing mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive), intensive care, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and post-acute care, including pulmonary rehabilitation to regain lung function and overall fitness.

Sleep Medicine & Respiratory Disorders During Sleep: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), central sleep apnoea, restless breathing, and the syndrome of hypoventilation are sleep-related breathing disorders that are diagnosed using a sleep study and are managed using CPAP/BiPAP therapy, lifestyle change, and surgical treatment in different cases.

Preventive Respiratory Health & Wellness: It includes prevention, early intervention, and patient education. To promote healthy lungs, we are providing screening of lung cancer, smoking cessation services, vaccination (e.g., influenza, pneumococcal), environmental exposure reduction counselling (air pollution, work-related risks), and wellness services.

FAQs

You may be asked to avoid using inhalers or bronchodilators for a certain period before the test, to refrain from smoking, heavy meals, or strenuous exercise, and to wear comfortable clothing. We will guide you individually depending on your condition.

Bronchoscopy is generally safe. It may involve mild discomfort, cough reflex, or temporary throat irritation. Sedation or local anaesthetic may be used for comfort. Risks include bleeding (especially if biopsy is taken), infection, reaction to sedation, or rare complications like pneumothorax. At ITM, all procedures are performed under strict sterile conditions and monitored by experienced staff.

Improvement depends on disease severity, treatment adherence, lifestyle changes (e.g., smoking cessation), and overall lung health. Some relief (less wheezing, better breathing) may be felt within days to weeks; long-term control (reducing exacerbations, preserving lung function) may require ongoing management over months or years.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is an umbrella term that encompasses a set of diseases, which affect the interstitium (space between the air sacs) in the lungs, because of inflammation and'scarring' (fibrosis) within the lung tissue. Consequently, the breathing and lung capacity become gradually limited. The detection and proper treatment and monitoring of the disease should happen at the earliest point, as it will help in slowing down the disease progression process.

Usually, a diagnosis is either made by an overnight sleep study or polysomnography that measures breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and sleep stages. Positive airway pressure devices (CPAP/BiPAP) and lifestyle changes (weight management and avoiding alcohol/sedatives prior to sleep) serve as our typical treatment options. In selective cases, medications, dental, or surgical options are discussed. Follow-up appointments to monitor progress are an important aspect of good treatment.

Indeed. We provide screening and diagnosis of lung cancer, including imaging and biopsy via bronchoscopy, staging of lung cancer, and working with our oncology colleagues for comprehensive plans of care such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgical referral. Interventional pulmonology has an important role in biopsies, airway stenting, and symptom management.

You should seek help from a pulmonary doctor if you suffer from any of the following conditions: a cough that does not go away for weeks or months; severe shortness of breath; wheezing without explanation; coughing blood; very frequent lung infections; pain in the chest wall when breathing; snoring or breathing problems while asleep or waking up tired; or additional abnormal imaging or laboratory findings that affect the lungs.

Absolutely. Avoiding smoking, reducing exposure to air pollution and occupational hazards, getting vaccinated, regular medical check-ups, maintaining fitness and a healthy weight, avoiding asthma triggers, and following prescribed treatment plans all help preserve lung health.

Bring past medical history, imaging (chest X-rays or CTs, inhalers, inhalers), list of currently taking medication, history of symptoms (when, how long, how frequent), history of exposures (smoking, job-related), and any sleep study reports (when applicable).
